Heat Pump Maintenance
Prevent breakdowns with scheduled heat pump maintenance that keeps your system clean, efficient, and performing at its best all year long.
Heat Pump Maintenance
1. Turn Off the Power
Before doing any maintenance, turn off the heat pump at the circuit breaker and the disconnect box near the outdoor unit to avoid electric shock.
7. Examine the Refrigerant Lines
- Make sure the insulation on the copper lines is intact and not deteriorated.
- Look for oil spots or hissing noises (signs of a refrigerant leak).
Refrigerant issues = call a licensed HVAC pro.
2. Clean or Replace Air Filters (Every 1–3 Months)
- Dirty filters restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and strain your system.
- If reusable: Vacuum and rinse with water, then let them dry completely.
- If disposable: Replace with a filter of the same size and rating.
Tip: Use HEPA or MERV 8–13 filters for better indoor air quality.
8. Test the Thermostat
- Verify accurate readings and test heating/cooling modes.
- Upgrade to a smart thermostat to improve efficiency and get rebate offers.
3. Check and Clean Indoor Vents & Registers
- Remove dust, debris, or obstructions (furniture, curtains) near your return and supply vents.
- Ensure airflow isn’t restricted anywhere.
9. Listen for Unusual Noises
- Grinding, squealing, or rattling may indicate:
- Loose parts
- Fan motor issues
- Belt wear
- Address odd sounds early to avoid bigger damage.
4. Clean the Outdoor Unit
- Remove leaves, dirt, and grass clippings from around the unit.
- Use a garden hose (not pressure washer) to gently rinse the coils.
- Make sure there is at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit.
10. Check Blower & Fan Blades
- Inspect for dust buildup or imbalance.
- Turn the blades manually (when system is off) to ensure they rotate freely.
- Clean gently with a cloth or brush.
5. Inspect the Condenser & Evaporator Coils
- Dirty coils reduce efficiency.
- If you see dirt build-up or corrosion, clean with coil cleaner spray or call a professional.
11. Inspect Electrical Components
- Tighten electrical connections (if trained).
- Look for corrosion or burn marks on wiring.
- Replace worn contactors, relays, or capacitors as needed.
If you’re not experienced with electrical systems — leave this to pros.
6. Check for Ice or Frost Build-up
- Some frost in winter is normal, but persistent ice may mean:
- Low refrigerant
- Defrost cycle malfunction
- Airflow restriction
- If it doesn’t defrost after a cycle, call a technician.
12. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up
A licensed HVAC technician will:
- Check refrigerant charge and pressure
- Test defrost cycle
- Inspect capacitors, contactors, and relays
- Lubricate moving parts
- Calibrate the thermostat
- Run system diagnostics
