Furnace Maintenance Checklist
01
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Before starting anything, switch off the power to your furnace. This protects you from electrical hazards and ensures safe cleaning.
Tip: Also shut off the gas supply if you’re doing deep maintenance.
02
Step 2: Check the Thermostat
Make sure your thermostat is working properly. Turn the heat on and see if your furnace responds quickly. If it’s slow, inaccurate, or unresponsive, it may need recalibration or replacement.
03
Step 3: Replace or Clean the Air Filter
One of the most important and easiest steps:
- Change disposable filters (usually every 1-3 months).
- If you have a washable filter, clean it and let it dry before reinserting.
Clogged filters reduce airflow, make your system work harder, and increase energy costs.
04
Step 4: Inspect the Furnace Flame
When you look at the burner flame, it should be a steady blue. A yellow or orange flame can signal a gas problem or dirty burners and needs professional attention.
05
Step 5: Clean the Furnace Interior
Dust and debris can build up inside the furnace:
- Use a vacuum with a nozzle attachment.
- Wipe down any accessible surfaces.
- Be careful around wiring and delicate components.
06
Step 6: Inspect and Clean the Blower Assembly
The blower motor pushes warm air through your home. Dust and buildup here can reduce airflow and cause overheating.
- Clean the blower blades and motor casing.
- Check the fan belt (if applicable) for signs of wear or cracking.
07
Step 7: Lubricate Moving Parts
If your furnace has motor bearings or blower shafts that aren’t sealed, they may need oil. Use motor oil recommended by the manufacturer — never over-lubricate.
08
Step 8: Check Vents and Air Ducts
Walk around your home and:
- Make sure all vents are open and unblocked.
- Inspect accessible ductwork for gaps, debris, or signs of mold.
If airflow seems weak or uneven, professional duct cleaning might be necessary.
09
Step 9: Test Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Furnaces can produce carbon monoxide if not vented properly.
- Test your CO detectors monthly.
- Replace batteries regularly.
- If you don’t have one installed near your furnace — get one!
10
Step 10: Inspect the Flue and Exhaust
The exhaust system (flue pipe or vent stack) should be:
- Securely attached
- Free from rust, corrosion, or blockages
- Vented outdoors properly
Poor ventilation is a serious safety risk.
11
Step 11: Check for Gas Leaks
If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call emergency services. For regular inspections, check connections with a gas leak detector or soapy water.
(We recommend leaving this step to professionals.)
12
Step 12: Test the Furnace Cycle
Turn your thermostat up and:
- Listen for unusual noises (rattling, screeching, banging).
- See how long it takes for the furnace to start.
- Check for consistent, warm airflow from vents.
13
Step 13: Schedule Professional Maintenance
Even with DIY upkeep, you should book annual professional maintenance. Centrum Solutions offers full-service furnace inspections and tune-ups.

- Check and calibrate gas pressure
- Inspect electrical components
- Test safety switches and ignition
