How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Posted on: August 9, 2016

Regularly maintaining and servicing your air conditioning unit is one of the best ways to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). During the summertime, we love to switch on the air conditioning to keep our homes and business premises cool and comfortable.

However, it is important to make sure that all air filtering units and other IAQ devices are well-maintained and serviced, otherwise indoor air quality can suffer.

Air conditioners usually effectively improve indoor air quality because they contain a filter which removes allergens and pollutants from indoor air. But, even if you don’t have air conditioning, it’s still important to think about maintaining good indoor air quality.

How can you improve indoor air quality so that you, your family, or staff don’t suffer any health problems? Here are top 4 tips to make sure that air quality inside your home is kept to an optimal standard.

1. Regularly Service Air Conditioning Units

It’s important to regularly change the filters in air conditioning units to improve indoor air quality. Over time filters can become blocked and stop functioning properly. What happens is that when dust, allergens, and even pet dander block the filter, it starts to recirculate through the room. This can make allergies and asthma worse.

2. Ventilate your Property Naturally

To keep good indoor air quality, it’s important to open windows and let your building ‘breathe.’ This allows fresh air to circulate and reduce indoor air pollution. Of course, while the AC unit is working, you should close windows. But on cooler days, you can just open the windows for some fresh air.

3. Control Moisture to Improve Indoor Air Quality

It’s very important to keep all rooms in your property as dry as possible by means of exhaust fans. Moisture can cause various health problems to develop and you may find that mold and rot start to develop in damp areas of the property. This can damage your property and can be very expensive to repair.

Make sure that you get leaking pipes fixed and always call a plumber if you have a large leak or flood in your property.

4. Install IAQ Devices

One of the best ways to improve indoor air quality is to install air purifiers and air cleaners. These can be used all-year round and will keep you healthy and the indoor air as clean as possible. You can also install ultraviolet lamps to kill off mold and bacteria that can form in ducts.
